The available grades of stainless steel round bar can be classified into four basic families: ferritic, martensitic, austenitic, duplex.
Martensitic stainless steel are similar to low alloy or carbon steels. They have tensile yield strengths of about 275MPa and so they are usually applied to machined. Example grade: 403,410,414,416,420,431 etc.
Austenitic stainless steel contain about 16 to 25% chromium, and they can also contain nitrogen in solution, both of which contribute to their high corrosion resistance. These alloys would be used even more widely. Example grade: 201,202,301,302,304,316,310S etc.
Ferritics stainless steel main alloying element is chromium, with contents typically between 11 and 17%. Carbon is kept low which results in these steels having limited strength. They are not hardenable by heat treatment and have annealed yield strengths in the range of 275 to 350MPa. Example grade: 409,430,443,439,436 etc.
Duplex stainless steel are called “duplex” because they have a two-phase micro structure consisting of grains of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel. It’s about twice as strong as regular austenitic or ferritic stainless steels. Example grade: 2750,2550,2507,2205,2304,1803 etc.
