Austenitic Cr-Ni stainless steel. Better corrosion resistance than Type 302. High ductility, excellent drawing, forming, and spinning properties. Essentially non-magnetic, becomes slightly magnetic when cold worked. Low carbon content means less carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone during welding and a lower susceptibility to inter granular corrosion.
AISI 304 stainless steel wire is the most common and affordable stainless steel wire. It exhibits good corrosion resistance and provides excellent spring properties. AISI 304 stainless steel wire can be used for high temperatures up to 550°F (228°C).
Type 304 stainless steel wire is a general purpose stainless alloy typically composed of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It is the most widely used stainless spring wire because of its high corrosion resistance properties and good tensile strength. For spring applications it is generally furnished in the cold drawn condition. Type 304 springs have good strength at moderate temperatures. If properly treated after forming they will set less than most other spring materials at temperatures up to 5.
